Hand Painted Digital Prints

Eric's hand painted digital prints begin with one of his original paintings. For example, Cloud Action Across the Bay #2 is a 22 x 22 inch watercolor he created in 2000.  It was shown as part of the 2003 Eric Hopkins Waypoints exhibition at the Farnsworth Art Museum.  In 2006 Eric digitally photographed the original painting and created 20 digital prints.  Each of these digital prints is then individually hand painted with watercolor, gouache and crayon (Prismacolor). As you can see from the images below, each painting is structurally similar, but each one is also different from the other.

A word about Eric's fish paintings.  Eric was raised on North Haven Island off the coast of Maine. His father was involved in the fishing business, and when Eric returned to the Rhode Island School of Design from a break in Maine, he would bring back trunk loads of fish to sell in Providence.  After his father died, Eric expanded beyond the blown glass works he had created under Dale Chihuly's tutelage and began painting fish based on his childhood images.  His 1979 painting "Fish" (22 x 28 inch lobster buoy paint on paper) was also included in the Farnsworth exhibition and served as the basis for his Fish #1 series of paintings on digital prints. The variations among these paintings can be seen in the Fish #1 illustrations in Carl Little's 2011 book," Eric Hopkins Above and Beyond."
