Alfred Chadbourn

Alfred "Chip" Chadbourn is recognized as one of Maine's most popular painters, but his life's adventures took him to France, Greece and in WWII to the Pacific.  Born in Turkey to a U.S. diplomat, his first show was in Paris in 1949 and sponsored by the playwright/poet Cocteau.  For a wonderful article about Chip's life and career, click here for a link to a 1981 article in Greater Portland magazine.

His works are represented in numerous museums and in the private collections of many prominent collectors around the world.  The Ogunquit Museum of American Art had the first retrospective exhibition of Chip's work in the summer of 2015.

Chip wrote two books on painting techniques which were (and still are) popular with aspiring artists, A Direct Approach to Painting (1980) and Painting with a Fresh Eye (1987).  We have been fortunate to have been able to sell several of the paintings which were illustrated in these books, and we currently have for sale two sketches which are illustrated in them as well.  The sketch of Kennebunkport served as the basis for several paintings titled, View of Kennebunkport, Maine.
