Maurice Freedman

As Ken Johnson wrote in his Sept. 9, 2005 New York Times review of a retrospective of Maurice Freedman's work, "[e]very so often you come across an artist whose work is so appealing and so accomplished that you wonder how it could have slipped under your radar."

We were fortunate to have had one of Freedman's spectacular Monhegan paintings, "The Wave," available for sale.  Although we do not have a specific date for when this was painted, we believe it was painted in the 1930's or 1940's.   We have also included several of his other Maine paintings for comparison.  If you have one of his paintings that you would like to sell, please let us know.

Maurice Freedman was born in Boston and studied art there in the early 1920's. He moved to New York in 1926 and then to Paris in 1928 where he studied with Andre Lhote and Fernand Leger.  A few years after his return to New York he had the first of many solo shows at the prestigious Midtown Galleries.  He vacationed and painted in Maine for many years thereafter.

His work is included in numerous private and public collections including the following: National Museum of American Art, Brooklyn Museum, Tel Aviv Museum of Art, Portland Museum of Art, Ogunquit Museum of American Art and Monhegan Museum.
