Philip Barter was born in Boothbay Harbor and now resides near Sullivan, Maine.  He has recently emerged as one of Maine's most sought after painters.  His work was the subject of a retrospective exhibition at the Bates College Museum of Art in 1992, and his work is in the permanent collections of Bates, the Farnsworth Art Museum and the Portland Museum of Art.  His life and work are the subject of a new book, "Philip Barter: Forever Maine," by award winning author Carl Little.

The 2018 summer art exhibition at Thomas Moser in Freeport will feature works by Philip Barter, his son Matt and his son-in-law, Brian Thayne Emerson.
