FAIRFIELD
PORTER
Am. 1907-1975

Born in suburb of Chicago, Fairfield Porter summered at Great Spruce Head Island, Maine ever since his childhood.  He was a realist painter in an era of Abstract Expressionism.

This exquisite lithograph was one in a portfolio entitled "Ten Lithographs by Ten Artists" for the benefit of the the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture.  Other artists contributing to the portfolio included Alex Katz and James Brooks (among others).

 

Porter describes the image as "a landscape of the caretaker's house on Great Spruce Head island with their dog on the doorsteps waiting to get in . . ."  This was Porter's first lithograph at the Bank Street Atelier, and this specific Artist's Proof was given by Fairfield Porter to Michel Tabard, one of the Bank Street Atelier lithographers who was involved in the printing of the portfolio.  The lithograph is included in the Joan Ludman's Fairfield Porter - A Catalogue Raissonne of His Prints at pages 91-92.
