STEPHEN
PACE
Am. 1918 - 2010
Stephen Pace was a seasonal resident of Stonington, Maine for nearly 40 years and often painted at Monhegan as well. Initially widely recognized for his abstract work such as the 1950's works for sale here, he slowly migrated to a looser representational style as can be seen in Outdoor Shower and the iconic Maine Sentinels to the right. His work is included in over 50 museum collections including the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
An exhibition of Stephen Pace's paintings and drawings was held at Fryeburg Academy's new Palmina F. and Stephen S. Pace Galleries. A review of the exhibition, the new Pace Gallery and Stephen Pace's career can be found in the September 13, 2009 Audience section of the Maine Sunday Telegram. Mr. Pace passed away on September 23, 2010 in Indiana where he had moved from Maine three years prior to his death.
